What does fantasy mean to you?
It might mean speculative fiction and imagined worlds, where magic and/or technology reign.
It might mean following a love story as it races across the page.
It might mean that there is a place that appears to look just like ours, but with subtle distortions and twists in reality that suggest not all is how it seems.
Then again, it might mean an afternoon full of daydreams; a shaft of light hitting the open page on your desk; a memory from the past; the monotonous drone of a teacher/professor/religious drowned out by the loud exuberance of your mind.
It might mean escape; if not into the worlds you’ve created, then into the worlds you’ve borrowed.
It might mean curiosity for those secret, unspoiled enclosures of the natural world and the creatures that may or may not sleep within.
As a writer, fantasy might be your greatest gift; as a reader, fantasy might be your greatest pleasure.
Whatever fantasy means to you, we would like to know.
The Galvanizers is actively seeking contributions for our 4th issue, themed Flights of Fantasy. We are interested in features that look specifically at the fantasy/speculative genre, or address an interpretation of “fantasy” in some way. How has fantasy influenced you as a reader/writer? What fantastic books/characters do you treasure, and why? How do you incorporate fantasy into your work?
Whether this be myth and fairy tale or modern and futuristic, fantasy is such a crucial part of writing that it surpasses time or genre or style. Flights of Fantasy serves as a tribute to the imagination.
Are you perhaps more visually inspired? We’ve prepared a small and somewhat random “moodboard” of fantastical images for your perusing pleasure below:
