This is a new blog feature we’re trying out, in which every Friday we post about new indie book launches, links of note, and events of interest. The quality of our news depends to a large extent on how much Isa and I read that week, but it helps a ton when someone sends us the info directly!
So, if you’ve published a book, read something good, or have a workshop or event you want to promote, email (thegalvanizersmag@gmail.com) or Tweet us so we can share it!
Book Launches
Dwellers – Eliza Victoria
We have a soft spot for Dwellers, given that Eliza Victoria gave us a very generous excerpt for our first issue. Also, it promises to be a suspenseful read. We fell in love with Eliza’s tight prose and the way she trusts the reader to work on crumbs of information, never giving too much away too soon. The official book launch is actually today from 4PM onwards at Powerbooks Greenbelt, where Eliza will be on hand for a Q&A, signing, and a reading.
Sadly the book is only available in print and sold in the Philippines, but with enough demand hopefully Visprint will release an ebook version! Read the excerpt here.
An Imaginary House by the Sea – Cecily Gates
Consider us big fans of The Page Girls – they actually have a lot to celebrate this week, as they’re wrapping up a whirlwind week of birthday giveaways. In addition, Page Girl Cecily Gates published her first novel! An Imaginary House by the Sea is a romance about a 20-something girl whose hopes of rekindling a relationship with her childhood flame get dashed by the fact that he’s now married to a beautiful but cold French wife. Described as a “snarky Nicholas Sparks,” the story delivers more than the premise suggests, with equal parts humor and heartbreak.
Also, to paraphrase Macklemore: “And shit, it was 99 cents!”
Unbreakable – Kesh Tanglao
With The Real Score Kesh Tanglao became a #romanceclass success story, and she’s only getting started. Unbreakable is the follow-up to her popular Gezellig series about a famous boy band and the girls who keep them on their toes. This time, the story swivels around to Lorin Perez who’s eager to start a new life in the UK with her rugby star paramour. Too bad Gezellig member and old flame Nigel isn’t content to let her go without a fight!
News Roundup
- Romance author Mina V. Esguerra, who shared some very useful notes on romance, publishing, and making it as an indie author, is holding a chick lit and New Adult workshop at Ayala Museum in August. See poster below for details. Deadline to sign up is July 29.

- Sometimes the desire to be published can be stronger than anything else – and your publisher is so nice, they’ll take care of your work, right? Author Katrina Ramos Atienza’s experiences with signing over copyright of her first few novels is a cautionary tale. We hope she’ll be able to get those books back!
- Blake Lively launched her new lifestyle site, Preserve. (A commenter on ONTD asked a very good question: Why didn’t she call her lifestyle site Lively?!) Disclaimer: We haven’t checked it out, not even a little bit, but this Hairpin feature tells us everything we need to know for now.
- The summer issue (theme: Security) of Scratch Magazine is online! Scratch is a must-read for any professional or aspiring professional writer because of their transparent discussions about money and writing. The bad news is that you have to subscribe to read it all. The good news is that a lot of their articles are free so long as you register. Worth it? Worth it.
- This epic treatise on TGIF’s unlimited mozzarella sticks will change how you feel about mozzarella sticks – and TGIF as a legitimate source of literature – forever. Caity Weaver makes us contemplate the nature of human existence and our bowel’s capacity to hold that much deep-fried lactose at the same time.
- Sometimes, the cover story you ought to write and the one that ought to be written are one and the same. Complex Magazine’s in-depth cover story with Lana del Rey gives new dimension to the often misunderstood artist with thoughtful questions – and even better responses. I’ve always liked that girl, and this piece will make you like her too. Or at least understand her a little more.
