Flights of Fantasy Issue Notes

We’ll be honest: we totally needed this month’s theme.

After the determined optimism of our first issue, we braced ourselves for the hard stuff: beginnings and unexpected roadblocks. While we’ve cherished every lesson from those issues, it is with a little sigh of relief that this month we gave ourselves–and our contributors–permission to dream.

Flights of Fantasy is a theme that we made a deliberate effort to interpret as loosely as possible. As mentioned in our issue brief, “fantasy” is a loaded word:

As a writer, fantasy might be your greatest gift; as a reader, fantasy might be your greatest pleasure.

Whether this be myth and fairy tale or modern and futuristic, fantasy is such a crucial part of writing that it surpasses time or genre or style. Flights of Fantasy serves as a tribute to the imagination.

In addition to features on fantasy fiction, we’re also proud to share: mini-manifestos on romance, a case for the supernatural, some chit-chat over fandom, and lessons on writing magical realism from voices familiar and new.

We look forward to sharing these articles with you this month. So dust off those wings, climb atop the nearest magical creature you see, and let’s take flight.

Love,

Bea & Isa
